Slum weekend at St Tims
Jul 21st, 2009
Young people from St Timothy’s Church recently had a weekend with a difference. On Saturday 25th July they erected three slum dwellings – made out of wooden pallets, tarpaulin and cardboard – on the forecourt of St Timothy’s Church, Crookes – and then slept in them overnight!
They did this to raise awareness – and money – for a slum project in Delhi run by Asha, a charity founded by an Indian paediatrician. Members of St Timothy’s recently went out to India to help set up close links between the church in Sheffield and one of the slum communities in Delhi. Some of the young people there in Delhi wanted to link up with the youth group at St Tim’s – and this weekend event is the result. In addition to the challenge of trying to build weatherproof shelters from basic materials, each of the three teams were given various tasks to perform, related to surviving life in a slum. Only rice, dahl and water was on the menu during the weekend!
So far they have raised over £300.
